Do you write with your left hand? Have you always been told that being left-handed makes you smarter? Here we bring you five impressive facts about left-handed writing.
1) What percentage of the population are left-handed?
According to tutor Sarah-Jane Page from EASTuition: 10 per cent of the population are left-handed. She describes it as a ‘rare trait’.
2) Does writing with your left hand make you evil?
No – it’s an old wives tale.
Sarah-Jane told us: “In Latin, the word for left-handed is ‘sinister’ and for thousands of years the devil was associated with the left side.
“Folklore and superstitions are laden with ‘evil’ references to the left; it was the Greeks who decided to wear wedding rings on the left hand to fend off the evil associated with the left side.”
3) Left-handers have messier handwriting
Apparently you are more likely to have messy handwriting if you are left-handed. Sarah-Jane says: “Languages that are written left-to-right, like English, are physically challenging to write with the left hand.”
Sarah-Jane added: “If a left-handed child is only permitted to write with the left hand but not taught how to write, the child may develop an uncomfortable, inefficient and messy form of writing that will stay with them into adulthood.”
If you are right handed give writing with your left hand a go.
