Pantone has just announced its 2019 colour of the year  as “Living Coral”.  So it’s time to embrace the coral and work it with the POSCA coral pink paint marker.

The Pantone 2019 colour of the year has been greeted with interest by trend-setters and designers. This is because it usually sets the agenda for future design and fashion trends. Take a look at our Living Coral mood-board on PINTEREST for further inspiration.

Influenced by nature

The Pantone 2019 colour of the year eschews digital technology in favour of something more natural, playful and authentic. This year Pantone’s shade PANTONE 16-1546 is therefore directly taken from nature. The choice of colour also has a serious message. It seeks to highlight the importance of coral reefs in our oceans.

The Pantone Institute states:  “PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energising aspects of colour found in nature. In its glorious display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerises the eye and mind. Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.”

Create fresh new looks

The Pantone Institute has provided resources for designers to so see how Living Coral works with other colours and shades. It has created five different colour palettes that feature PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral to help you bring this year’s special shade into your designs. The palettes illustrate the dynamic nature of this colour within various combinations.

Many of the colour ways illustrated by Pantone take nature as their influence. So expect to see lots of florals, tropical birds and amazing sea-themed designs popping up next year.

Try coral pink for yourself

This announcement is great news for artists and crafters. You can use this shade in your own projects with POSCA paint markers using the POSCA 5M marker in ‘Coral Pink’.

To see the coral pink POSCA in action, check out these sketches below by uni-ball artist Ella Johnston. We asked her to whip up some simple illustrations using this POSCA. We wanted the drawings to be influenced by nature so we have a coral illustration (above), shell and starfish drawings and a flamingo sketch.

Make a sea-themed gift box

We also wanted to see how the POSCA coral pink worked with other colours. So, Ella has made a pretty personalised gift box design with a seashell theme using  coral pink and other POSCA colours. Using the Pantone colour palettes as a reference we combined the coral pink with shades of blue, orange, light yellow and a lovely emerald green POSCA pen shade. You can see how we made it in this video how-to here…
