Create a Christmas Eve Box with POSCA

Make a cute Christmas Eve Box with POSCA paint markers to delight a loved one. You can create a little piece of magic with a little recycling and easy illustration know-how.

A Christmas Eve Box is really charming and a lovely thing to do for someone young or old at Christmas time. You don’t have to spend loads on money on it you just need to give it some thought. Decorate it yourself with POSCA, PIN or SIGNO pens and fill it with mini gifts that mean something rather than ones that cost something!

Becki Clark shows you here how to make a really pretty Christmas Eve Box with POSCA pens. She talks you through some simple illustrative techniques that will transform an old box into a special treat.

Top tip!
Before you start on the box itself, practice your motifs and lettering on some paper before you start decorating for real.

You can use any deep cardboard box. If your box has any printing on it you can cover it with a base coat of acrylic paint. Our box was printed one side but not on the other so we turned it ‘inside out’. This resulted in a plain container to work on with the POSCA.

Easy festive Illustration

Now you have your plain cardboard container you can get started. We love the look on white pen on brown card but you can pick whatever POSCA colour you like. How about green on white for a traditional look or perhaps a light blue on white for a Scandic-style look?

To begin add a scalloped border to the top of the box. Do this by drawing semi circles along the fold line and colouring them in with your chosen colour. You can see here how the white looks on the brown cardboard gives the box an almost gingerbread feel. This is simply perfect for the festive season

Create simple botanical motifs

Next add your foliage motif border inside the scalloped edge. This simple botanical motif can be created by drawing a line and adding teardrop shapes along the line joining at the same place. Add one teardrop shape to the end of the line to complete the motif and colour in.

Repeat the foliage illustration to create a botanical border. Now add small circles between the leaves.

Decide on your wording for the box. Ours is going to say “Tilly’s Christmas Eve Box”. To make sure the lettering is balanced and central letter your middle word (in our case “Christmas”) in the middle of the box. This will then act as a guide for the rest of the lettering

Add in your other letters. If you don’t want quite as much lettering you can always add more foliage and dots to the top of the box.

Finish it off

Complete the look around the whole box. Create scalloped lines to the top of the side panels of the box. Then repeat your foliage motif working in different directions across the panel, adding  dots between each of the motifs. Try and keep a roughly equal distance between each of your motifs to give your pattern balance.
