Add some pizazz to your Christmas pressies this year by finishing off your gift wrap with an illustrated Christmas gift tag. We’ve got artist and illustrator Ella Johnston to give you some easy illustrated Christmas gift tag ideas. She’s used PIN, SIGNOs and POSCA pens to help you get started.
Easy illustrated Christmas gift tag ideas: Cute characters
Make the most of the fact that POSCA pens work on wood and use your favorite paint markers to decorate MDF shapes. These MDF illustrated Christmas gift tags will delight your chosen recipient as they can keep the tags as decorations. Ella has used simple shapes and colours to create a range of illustrated Christmas characters. We love the penguin and robin designs, which one is your favorite? Blend your POSCA paint marker pens when wet and overlay them when dry.
Easy illustrated Christmas gift tags: Winter warmers
You’ve just got to go cosy at Christmas. Ella has combined Christmas cosiness with some sparkle here by using SIGNO sparkly gel pens to brighten up plain white gift tags. The illustrator has used really simple mittens, woolly hat, and stocking motifs to illustrate the tags. The sparkly tags will, therefore, add a fun, bright dimension to even the most plainly wrapped gift. We love the way the silver and gold sparkly pens work well for depicting the fluffy pom-pom and edging on the hat.
Easy illustrated Christmas gift tags: Mono magic
Sometimes it’s nice to keep things simple. These stylish black and white Christmas gift tags really demonstrate the power of the uni-PIN’s uni Super ink flow. The even, consistent black lines the pen produce makes for a strong graphic line that therefore looks great against the white gift tag. Ella has taken advantage of the PIN’s wide range of nib sizes here, using them to make simple, holly, Christmas tree, and snowflakes drawings. Why not give this a go today? Easy illustrated Christmas gift tags: Out of the black
One of the sheer joys of working with POSCA and SIGNO pens is that both pens sit wonderfully on dark card and paper. Therefore this makes both pens ideal for all manner of Christmas crafting, especially card-making. Both SIGNO and POSCA dry opaque and produce a really solid, vibrant finish on even black card as demonstrated here.
You can use your SIGNO gel pens or POSCA paint markers to create a range of designs on black card. To get started why don’t you try some easy star-shapes and some SIGNO broad pens in this quick drawing video?

Finally, we’re not gonna lie, we are slightly in love when how the SIGNO white broad pens look on kraft card. The contrast between the creamy opaque white pigment ink on the soft, buff-coloured card just looks so stylish and high-end.
Ella has used really simple but classic Christmas motifs on these gift tags and we think it’s all the better for it. You can see how to to the simple fir sprig design here or check out how to create the laurel branch here.
